I Stayed in Costa Rica's Volcanic Hot Spring Town 🌋

Best Things to Do in La Fortuna / Arenal

If you’re planning a trip to La Fortuna, you’ll quickly realize how many options there are—from waterfalls and hot springs to hikes and wildlife tours.

This guide covers the best things to do in La Fortuna and the Arenal area, based on what I personally recommend. Whether you’re here for a couple of days or longer, these are the experiences that are actually worth your time.

If you don’t want to overthink it

If you’re short on time, these are the top experiences I’d prioritize:

  • Hanging bridges

  • Hot springs

  • A guided wildlife tour

These give you a really good mix of what La Fortuna is known for.

Arenal Volcano Area Hikes

The Arenal area has several hiking options, from easy walks to more challenging trails. You’ll get views of the volcano, lava fields, and surrounding jungle.

If it’s your first time, I’d recommend choosing a guided option so you can learn more about the area as you go.

Hot Springs (Paid & Free Options)

La Fortuna is known for its hot springs, and there are quite a few options depending on your budget.

Paid hot springs tend to be more developed, with multiple pools, restaurants, and a more relaxing atmosphere. There are also a few free options if you’re looking for something more low-key (check out el Choyin).

This is one of those experiences I’d definitely plan ahead for, especially during busier times.

La Fortuna Waterfall

This is one of the most iconic spots in the area. It’s a short but steep walk down to the waterfall, where you can swim and take in the views.

It’s worth going earlier in the day if you want to avoid crowds.

Sloth or Wildlife Tours (Bogarin Trails)

This is one of the best ways to actually see wildlife up close. Sloths, frogs, birds, and other animals are much easier to spot with a guide.

Hanging Bridges

The hanging bridges are one of the most popular activities in La Fortuna, and for good reason. You’ll walk through the rainforest canopy with views from above the jungle.

This is a really good option if you want something active but still easy to do.

Coffee and Chocolate Tour

If you want something a bit different from hiking and nature, a coffee and chocolate tour is a great option. You’ll learn how both are made and usually get to try everything along the way.

La Fortuna is one of the easiest places in Costa Rica to plan activities, but it’s still worth deciding in advance what you want to prioritize.

A mix of one or two tours, some time outdoors, and a slower day at the hot springs usually makes for the best experience.

La Fortuna is nestled just below the great Arenal volcano. Known for its natural hot springs, historic hiking trails, waterfalls, and quintessential view of the perfectly symmetrical volcano looming over the town. While you are here be sure to find fresh brewed coffee, and some specialty chocolates!
